PREMARKET ALERT: Verenium (VRNM)

Verenium Corp. (Nasdaq: VRNM) are up 29 percent to 73 cents a share on early volume of about 1,000 shares. But it is not a stock that normally trades much in the premarket at all. The company announced a joint venture with BP (BP) to commercialize cellulosic ethanol. The company is also developing a second commercial-scale cellulosic ethanol site in the Gulf Coast region. — Mike Tarsala
