LDK Solar Co. Ltd. (NYSE: LDK) is seeing a lot of action this pre-market Friday. At 8:43 AM EST we have shares trading down another 7.4% at $7.27 on over 1 million shares. This one already fell from $9.20 on Wednesday’s close as a securities sale yesterday sent shares south on a whopping 17.49 million shares. The stock had been indicated down 10% earlier, but the one phrase that kept coming to mind yesterday from its own news dissemination was awful: the “going concern” disclosure.

The company’s fresh filing states: Offering 16,520,000 ADSs instead of 18,900,000 ADSs in this offering; net proceeds from this offering are expected to be approximately $108.1 million and LDK’s total capitalization and the dilution effect will change accordingly. Net proceeds are for the following:

approximately $90.0 million of the net proceeds to pay down short-term debt at interest rates between 5.00% and 6.00% per year;

to fund polysilicon production plant and the expansion of solar module business and for general corporate purposes.

The market is selling off sharply today, but no one let the solar stocks know, which are rising sharply higher following positive earnings results and forecasts from SunTech (STP) and Trina Solar (TSL). The rise comes despite oil dipping 2.25% below $80 as that trade has unraveled and solar stocks are actually starting to have a fundamental rationale to investing in them, and are closing in on economic viability. Also, the recent news of subsidies in India is still having a positive impact. Shares of Canadian Solar (CSIQ) and SolarFun (SOLF) are seeing increased bullish call activity today, and are breaking out on a technical basis. However, juggernaut First Solar (FSLR) is down on the day, along with LDK Solar (LDK), so it looks like traders are targeting specific companies in the sector, which is also an unraveling, as usually the entire group trades together, but now momentum and value players are putting money to work, as can be seen by the relative strong share volume today.

Trina Solar Ltd. (NYSE: TSL) is trading up over 3% after the Chinese solar player managed to beat earnings estimates. We would note here that there is a negative bias on the sector and many ‘sell the news’ trends have been seen whether the news was good or bad. At 8:28 AM EST we have shares up 3.1% at $27.25 on about 8,000 shares. With an average volume of 1.5 million shares, we’d expect to see more activity in the stock as the market gets closer to opening. This also has shares of LDK, CSIQ up as well.

Solar energy stocks are mostly higher in premarket trading this morning, after UBS upgraded Sunpower Corporation (Nasdaq – SPWRA) to a Buy, calling it the best-positioned U.S. solar play.

The positive sentiment is also spilling over to many other names in the group, as they all can potentially benefit from the same trends UBS says could cause residential solar adoption to double next year.

The job market is still rough, and fewer consumers can afford big solar installations. But system prices have come down in the past 12 months, prompting more consumers to take advantage of a 30% federal solar tax credit, as well as state incentives.

The combination means that consumers can in theory makek their money back on a solar investment in about 5 years… nearly half the payback time of a solar investment made just a few years ago.

Sunpower and Evergreen Solar (Nasdaq – ESLR) sharse were up nearly 5% at 9:15 Eastern. Meanwhile, JA Solar (Nasdaq — JASO), LDK Solar (NYSE – LDK) and Suntech Power Holdings (NYSE – STP) all were rising 1.5% or more in premarket trading.

SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ: SPWRA) is being hammered hard this morning after teh solar stock lowered its guidance. The company said that the rise in the US Dollar is hurting earnings. Outside of currencies, it maintained guidance.

It sees Q4 revenues between $388 and $418 million and net income of at $0.58 to $0.65 on an adjusted basis, while estimates are $418 million in revenues and $0.75 EPS. That isn’t going to cut it, not for a group of stocks which still has to outperform estimates even after selling off so much.

Shares are down a sharp 22% at $39.19 on 1.5 million shares as of 9;57 AM EST. Its average daily volume is almost 3 million shares.

First Solar (NASDAQ: FSLR) is down 7.6% at $164.00, Canadian Solar (NASDAQ: CSIQ) is down 10% at $11.16, Suntech Power (NYSE: STP) is down 10% at $18.05, and LDK Solar (NYSE: LDK) is down almost 8% at $21.75.
