Higher gas costs are already rolling back into hitting airline stocks. As some of these have risen 3-fold or more from lows after the last $30+ drop in oil prices per barrel, any rise in black gold takes a toll.

UAL Corporation (NASDAQ: UAUA) closed yesterday at $12.40 and the last trade at 9:03 AM EST was at $11.23 (-9.44%) on about 173,000 shares.

Jetblue (NASDAQ: JBLU) is also lower after a $5.46 close with shares down about 3.5% at $5.27 on about 6,200 shares.

NASDAQ airlines are treated as a pre-market trader proxy for day oil-bet trades by many right now because of the more transparency.

Shares of Jack Henry & Associates, Inc. (NASDAQ: JKHY) are being hit hard pre-market. The provider of integrated computer systems for in-house and outsourced data processeing for financial institutions missed its earnings targets last night. As of 8;30 AM EST we have only seen about 5,500 shares trade hands, but the drop is by about 14.5% to $19.00. With a 52-week range of $20.13 to $29.24, you can count this one as a 52-week low.

On average this trades 835,00 shares per day. Its stock option trading does exist but is generally inactive.

Level 3 Communications Inc. (NASDAQ: LVLT) is rather active in pre-market trading. The company’s stock was cut to “Underperform” at Oppenheimer this morning along with a couple other communications carriers. As of 8:55 this has traded over 150,00 shares and the stock is down nearly 5% at $3.23. What is surprising more than the drop and more than the call is that the volume isn’t already up in the “millions” as this trades about 25 million shares per day and is a key day trader and low-price trader stock. The 52-week trading range is $1.68 to $5.38. This also takes the stock to key technical levels as the 50-day moving average is $3.30 and the 200-day moving average is $2.95.

NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ: NVDA) is leading the stocks pre-market as the most active NASDAQ trading issue, although it isn’t really the highest gap-up seen. Shares are trading up about 5% at $11.63 pre-market at 8:45 AM ESTand we have seen about 513,000 shares trade hands. The company’s earnings were a disappointment to most since it posted a loss after a $196 million charge to cover its technical issues in graphics processors. But traders cheered that the company would spend $1 Billion to buy back shares as its market cap is currently about $6 Billion.

More importantly is that this stock has been beaten like a rented mule over the last year. Its 52-week trading range is $10.55 to $39.67, so $10+, $11+, and on are still at far lower prices than have been seen before it announced problems with the new graphic processors. We’d also note that its last short interest was up more than 6 million shares to 27.1 million. We’d also note an elevated interest in call options that was seen ahead of earnings as well as yet another issue in the stock.

This should be one of the focal stocks for traders today.
