Suntech Power Holdings Co. Ltd. (NYSE: STP) is seeing a surge in both its price and its pre-market trading volume. Shares are trading up over 4% at $38.90 at 8:40 AM EST on more than 130,000 shares pre-market after beating earnings and raising guidance.

Its new guidance for 2008 is $2.05 to $2.15 Billion in sales, up from a prior range of $1.9 to $2.1 Billion and above estimates of $2.06 Billion in revenues. The company is also becoming one of the largest solar players as it now expects capacity to be able to run at an annual 1 Gigawatt production by the end of the year.

Volatility is this solar player’s middle name as its 52-week trading range is $28.19 to $90.00.

Other solar tickers to watch: FSLR, ESLR, CSIQ, SOLF, CSUN.. most are indicated higher pre-market

We are seeing a huge gap up this morning in shares of SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ: SPWR). After the close yesterday we saw an announcement that SunPower and OptiSolar signed an 800MW photovltaic supply contract with PG&E in San Luis Obispo County in California. What is interesting is that OptiSolar’s 550MW Topaz Solar Farm was taken entirely for its output, and the other 250MW coming from a solar farm that is a subsidiary of SunPower hasn’t been built yet. There are also contingencies.

SunPower is getting the benefit of this as though it won the whole contract. Shares are up 11% at $87.29 on 275,000 shares as of 9:00 AM EST. The high volatility is probably contributing as its 52-week range is $53.18 to $164.49. Its short interest of 19.1 million shares at the end of July is adding more fuel to the fire.

Trina Solar Limited (NYSE: TSL) has just posted its quarterly earnings report. You can read the full analysis and comparison at 247Wallst.com, but the forward margins and Wall Street’s demanding more and more out of solar players is the key this morning.

Shares are extremely active and are giving up gains of the prior day. An average trading day is 1.5 million shares, yet we crossed 200,000 shares pre-market at 8:20 AM EST with 1 hour and 10 minutes to the open. The pressure on the stock is downward. After the report, shares were down almost $2.00 then down almost $3.00. Now shares are trading between $46.00 and $46.25 at 8:20 AM EST.

Trina Solar closed at $49.63 yesterday ahead of earnings and that move was more than a $4.00 gain from the prior day. Its 52-week trading range is $25.88 to $73.06. As a reminder, early pre-market trading is often very different than trading during normal trading hours.

As traders love solar stock volatility, this may be one of the more active volume stocks compared to normal trading volume today.
