U.S. Airways Group, Inc. (NYSE: LCC) and UAL Corp. (NASDAQ: UAUA) are both trading higher this morning on reports that the two are about to merge to create the #2 air carrier in the United States. This will be a blow for consumers as options for flying become more and more at the benefit of airlines over scheduling and prices. Both stocks were up last night: UAUA, +7.9% and LCC, +26.1%…

UPDATE 9:17 AM EST UAUA up 6.3% at $20.15 on 2.2 million shares; LCC up 17.9% at $8.04 on over 3 million shares.

At 8:14 AM EST we have shares up: UAUA up 7.5% at $20.36 on over 50,000 shares, almost a 52-week high; LCC shares are up 20% at $8.22 on almost 700,000 shares, which is a 52-week high above the $2.00 to $8.17 trading range of the last year.

Higher gas costs are already rolling back into hitting airline stocks. As some of these have risen 3-fold or more from lows after the last $30+ drop in oil prices per barrel, any rise in black gold takes a toll.

UAL Corporation (NASDAQ: UAUA) closed yesterday at $12.40 and the last trade at 9:03 AM EST was at $11.23 (-9.44%) on about 173,000 shares.

Jetblue (NASDAQ: JBLU) is also lower after a $5.46 close with shares down about 3.5% at $5.27 on about 6,200 shares.

NASDAQ airlines are treated as a pre-market trader proxy for day oil-bet trades by many right now because of the more transparency.
