We are seeing a flurry of interest in shares of Sirius Satellite Radio Inc (NASDAQ: SIRI), or SIRIUS-XM, right before the open. The company’s CEO Mel Karmazin is coming on CNBC today around 1:30 PM EST with none other than CNBC’s JIM CRAMER. The bet is that he’s going to talk up his stock, discuss more stock buying he wants to do, and other bullish issues. As CRAMER has been friendly with Karmazin in the past, despite recent caution, many believe Cramer may at least give it somewhat of a small endorsement for a reward for Karmazin’s dog and pony show.

Shares are up 3% at the open at $1.37 on almost 1.5 million shares at the bell.

We are seeing active trading in SIRIUS Satellite Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) pre-market on several pieces of data. It looks like the FCC has given the final green light call to approve its XM Satellite Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: XMSR) buyout. Sirius also posted a 25% revenue gain and posted a narrower loss.

So far at 8:57 AM EST we have seen SIRI trade up by almost 1% on almost 2.4 million shares. We have also seen XMSR up over 5% at $9.77 and we’ve seen more than 425,000 shares trade hands there.

Today’s intra-day price action may see sudden swings up or down based upon analyst calls more than on the merger news.

Sirius Satellite Radio (NASDAQ:SIRI) and XM Satellite Radio (NASDAQ: XMSR) are reversing their earlier losses and headed back up. Reports from Reuters, DealReporter, and the WSJ are all claiming that the 2-2 deadlock is going to be broken with the final vote coming FOR the merger. Until you have a press release from the FCC or from Sirius or XM be advised that should be treated as a “rumor-lite” but it is one which is starting to be widely reported.

As of 2″25 PM EST XM shares are up a sharp 10% at $10.03 on almost 15,000,000 shares and Sirius shares are up over 3% at $2.46 on over 36 million shares.

Hopefully after 18 months, we’ll finally get to put this sage to bed.

It has been a while since have seen XM Satellite Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: XMSR) as a leader in CBOE options trading volume. But this morning we have seen an increased activity out to OCTOBER 2008. In the OCT08 $9.00 CALLS we have seen 12,415 contracts trade hands as of 11:10 AM EST and the open interest before today was 12,750. While there are other active contracts in various months and strike prices in both PUTS and CALLS, this is by far the most active of the XM contracts today.

XM’s underlying stock is actually down 1.5% at $8.49 on only 1.3 million shares. It trades on average about 5.5 million shares per day. As a reminder, 12,000 contracts is representative of 1.2 million shares on a fully leveraged basis.

It seems someone must be expecting a rapid approval of the Sirius Satellite Radio Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) merger or another positive development.

If you are a price weighted volume trader that looks for reversal days with large sell-offs on huge volume, Sirius Satellite radio Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: SIRI) and XM Satellite Radio Holdings Inc. (NASDAQ: XMSR) are sending you huge alerts today. Goldman Sachs killed the price targets and cut estimates for 2009 on the companies pre-market.

At 12: 16 PM EST we have seen over 64 million shares of Sirius Satellite trade hands and shares are down almost 12% at $2.141. This marks a 52-week low on major volume capitulation day. Sirius saw 71 million shares trade just on Monday and today is set up to be the most active trading since late-March when we saw over 100 million shares trade two days in a row.

52-Week Range: $2.36 to $3.94
Avg Volume: 31 million
Market Cap: $3.22 Billion

At 12: 16 PM EST we have seen over 16 million shares of XM Satellite trade hands and shares are down 17% at $8.59. This marks a 52-week low on major volume capitulation day. This is the most active share volume since late-March.

52-Week Range: $9.62 – $16.44
Avg Volume: 5,504,120
Market Cap: $2.74 Billion

As a reminder, many traders use major volume down days as the sign of capitulation days. The flip-side is that stocks hitting 52-week lows tend to keep hitting 52-week lows. You make the call.
